GLP-1

What Are GLP-1 Medications?

GLP-1 medications like Semaglutide and Tirzepatide help with weight loss, lower blood sugar levels, reduce A1C, and decrease the risk of heart issues. These medications mimic a natural hormone that helps with digestion, suppresses appetite, and slows the rate food leaves the stomach, helping you feel full longer. They are most effective when combined with regular exercise and a healthy diet.

Benefits:

  • Promotes weight loss

  • Helps maintain a healthy weight

  • Lowers blood sugar and A1C levels

  • Reduces the risk of heart issues

What to Expect

Initial Effects: Some may feel a decrease in appetite within a few days, but for most, it may take longer.

Dosage Adjustment: You’ll start with a lower dose for 4 weeks to minimize side effects, then gradually increase to a maintenance dose for the best results.

Side Effects: The most common are gastrointestinal (GI) issues like nausea, constipation, diarrhea, and heartburn. These side effects are more common when starting or increasing the dose but tend to lessen over time.

Storage Instructions:

  • Keep the medication in the refrigerator (36°F to 40°F / 2°C to 4°C), but let it warm to room temperature before use.

  • Protect from light and heat. Do not freeze.

  • Store it safely out of reach of children and pets.

Potential Risks:

Common Side Effects: GI symptoms (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, etc.), headache, and dry mouth.

Severe Reactions: If you experience a rash, difficulty breathing, or swelling, call 911 immediately.

Low Blood Sugar: Symptoms include dizziness, confusion, sweating, or rapid heartbeat. If you notice these, stop taking the medication and contact your doctor right away.

Important Note

It’s essential to consult with your healthcare provider before starting GLP-1 medications to ensure they’re right for you and to discuss any concerns you may have.

Basic Principles

Eat Real Foods

Focus on whole, unprocessed foods—think lean proteins, colorful vegetables, fruits, and whole grains.

Protein First

Whether you prefer three meals a day or smaller, more frequent meals, be consistent to help regulate appetite and blood sugar.

Stay Hydrated

Aim for 8–10 cups of water daily. Medications like semaglutide /tirzepatide can sometimes decrease thirst, so be intentional about drinking water.

Moderate Portions

Even healthy foods can cause weight gain if eaten in excess. Start getting familiar with recommended portion sizes (e.g., a palm-sized portion of protein, a fist-sized portion of carbs).
